This 2024 video from Tamil Nadu shows the police beating up transgender women.

Avideoallegedly showing police brutality against women in Uttar Pradesh is making the rounds on social media. The 21-second-longvideoshows police, armed with batons,beating upwomen and chasing them away.

Sharing the clip onFacebook, one person wrote in Hindi, “Women are being respected a lot by the police. The truth of this video should be revealed, and strict action should be taken against the culprits. This video is actually from Uttar Pradesh.”

India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is from a 2024 incident in Tamil Nadu that involved transgender women.Our Probe

Reverse-searching keyframes from the viral clip led us to thesame videoshared by a Facebook account on September 25, 2024. Its caption, in Tamil, stated that around 40 transgender women had gathered at the Panagudi police station. They got into an argument with the police and were subsequently lathi-charged.

We found severalnews reportsabout this video from September 2024. According to them, this incident took place in Panagudi, a town in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The police had reportedly received complaints about transgender women blocking two-wheelers and extorting money from them at night. Somereportsalso added that they also engaged in sexual activities on the Nellai-Kanyakumari National Highway near Panagudi.

Reportedly, two transgender women were taken to the police station for questioning. Following this incident, agroup of transgender womengathered around thepolice stationin support of those detained. Some of themstripped, verbally abused the police, and vandalised flower potsnear the police station. An argument between them and the police then led to a lathi-charge.

Per reports, five transgender women wereinjuredin this incident and demanded action against the police officers who had beaten them up.
